Meditation, a practice that's been embraced for centuries, is often shrouded in myths and misconceptions that can deter newcomers. In this post, we'll unravel five common myths that could get in the way of discovering your bliss through meditation.
Setting the record straight.
We don’t believe in elitist ideologies or throwing away science to access spirituality. We believe in making peace of mind and wellness accessible to all, with meditation being one of the best entry points for those of us on a healing journey or looking for peace in our busy world.
At OM Meditation & Wellness, we're here to guide you on your journey to self-discovery and well-being, and it all begins with dispelling these misconceptions.
We bet you’ve heard of these before:
1. Myth: Meditation is Only for Spiritual Gurus
Reality: Meditation is for everyone, regardless of your spiritual inclinations. It's a science-backed practice that focuses on calming the mind, reducing stress, and enhancing mental clarity. It's about embracing the present moment, not a specific belief system.
Meditation has been proven to impact your nervous system (find out more about the two sides of the nervous system and how different practices can help us regulate and recenter them) and provide emotional and physical benefits. You don’t need to have any religious or spiritual inclinations or subscribe to anything to begin and feel the benefits of personal or group meditation practice.
2. Myth: You Need a Completely Empty Mind to Meditate
Reality: It's perfectly normal for your mind to wander during meditation. The goal is not to suppress your thoughts but to observe them without judgment. Over time, you'll become more skilled at guiding your focus.
Meditation is a mindFULness practice, not a mindLESSness practice. Instead of fighting thoughts or getting upset when you find yourself thinking about stressors or worries, try letting go, recentering and noticing the breath.
Practice feeling the sensation of the breath during the beautiful sensory experience of our signature Group Meditation Class.
3. Myth: Meditation Takes Hours Each Day
Reality: Even a few minutes of meditation daily can yield transformative, hollistic, positive results.
If you're low on time, remember: start with quality, not quantity. Short, consistent sessions are often more effective and easier to sustain than sporadic, lengthy ones.
Some people don't want to sit and meditate briefly because of their environment or busy schedule, the good news is, getting "distracted" or interrupted during meditation is truly just an opportunity to strengthen your abilities.
The even better news? You're always welcome at OM!
Not ready to join us in person? Start with 1 or 2 minutes on a timer, focusing on your breath or following a guided meditation online.
4. Myth: Meditation is Too Difficult for Beginners
Reality: Meditation can be as simple as focusing on your breath. You don't need special skills or extensive training to start. You don't have to be at a calmer place in life to experience the calm of meditation and you don't have to be better at anything to get the rewards of mindfulness.
You aren't going to have to prove anything or be anyone but yourself when you meditate at OM. Our facilitators can hold and guide the space as you dip into the session at your own level.
Remember: Anyone can learn the basics and build from there.
5. Myth: You'll See Immediate Results
Reality: While some experience immediate benefits, meditation is a gradual process. It's about consistency and patience. Over time, you'll notice improvements in focus, emotional balance, and overall well-being.
Meditation is an accessible practice with numerous scientifically proven benefits. It's not about achieving perfection; it's about embracing the journey. Don't let mythical ideas stop you from exploring something you feel called to try!
